What Divorce Means For You & Your Family

Marital Dissolution, or Divorce, is a tough obstacle for anyone to overcome. Choosing to end your marriage can mean many things for your finances, your family, and your well-being. Luckily, Morinaka Schworm is here to help you minimize the damage that might come from such a decision.

A Divorce begins with filing a Petition for Dissolution along with a lot of supporting paperwork with the court in the county where you reside. The petition is finalized when a judge signs a Judgment that legally ends your marriage and dictates the terms of your property division, spousal support, child support, and child custody.

This process can take anywhere from a few months to a year to complete, depending on how many issues you and your spouse agree or disagree. In the meantime, you may be able to get temporary custody of your children and temporary spousal support until the Judgment is complete.

If you and your spouse are unable to agree on things such as custody, parenting time, property division, and spousal support and your attorneys or a mediator cannot help you resolve those disagreements, a trial will be conducted and the judge will make those determinations based on the law.
